Once Kings became more powerful and more laws came into force in our country nobles didn't need their castles to be so strong and so they moved into large houses instead.

The earliest castles have vanished because the wood has rotted away. Some of the later stone castles are still remaining although they have no roofs because they were made out of wood too.

The stone castles that are left have been damaged due to gunpowder and cannons that were used later in the fighting but there are clues to look for if you go to a castle ruin.
