A castle was like a small town and some had more than 50 people living there.
The lords and ladies were in charge of their own castles but some castles were built by important knights. They had their servants living with them in the keep of the castle.
The bailey also had lots of people living there and lots of buildings.
All these people would have lived within the castle walls and done very important jobs. They all worked as one big team to make sure the castle was safe and worked well. Some of these people not only had to live in the castle but also needed a place to work in the grounds too. It is easy to see how busy the castle could get with all these people there.
