Families are very important to people in India. Very young children learn to show their respect to elders by bowing to them and touching their feet when they meet.

In India lots of people from the same family live in the same house. Children, parents and grandparents all live together. When a man gets married he stays with his family and his new wife moves in to help look after everyone. The men go out to work to earn money for their families.

Women look after the house and their days start really early in the morning. They pound wheat, wash clothes by hand, cook food over an open fire and fetch water from the village well. Some of the women even go to work in the fields as well as all these jobs in the house. Although the Indian government is trying to make sure all children go to school some have to go to work instead as their families are so poor.
