| More than 2/3 of people in India work on a farm although most farms are very small. The people who own land grow food for the family to eat and sell, mainly wheat, rice, chickpeas, lentils and beans. Families who have no land work for other farmers but because the farmers are so poor they can not afford to pay their workers much money. |

Farmers in India grow some things to send to other parts of the world like jute, cotton, sugar cane, rice and tea as well as seeds, spices, tobacco, rubber and coffee. |
The monsoon season is very important to farmers who rely on it to bring rain to water the crops so that they will grow. They don’t have watering systems like we do or regular rain so the monsoon season is very important to Indian farmers.
The government store lots of grain just in case the monsoon fails and the farmers haven’t been able to grow any crops. This helps to prevent a full scale famine where thousands of people could die. |
