India - Food

Many Hindus believe that when they die they are reborn as an animal or another human. Animals are respected and many Hindus are vegetarians but some do eat fish and chicken. The cow is especially sacred and is never eaten. Cows are even more special than other animals because they produce milk for everyone not just their own calves.

Cows are very special in India, even the traffic has to go around them.

Making rice beer
When cooking a meal the women in the family get together to do it. The floor in the house is kept very clean because the cooks get the food ready while they are crouching or sitting on the floor. Food is cooked on a stove sunk into the floor or on a small clay stove. They make a fire with wood or cow dung which cooks the food. A popular meal is vegetables cooked in spicy sauces and served with rice.

Sitting on the floor to eat
Some Indian people sit on the floor to eat, others eat their meals at a table. Traditionally people scoop up their food with their fingers or with pieces of flat bread and let the men in the family eat first.
