India - Wildlife

India has tried really hard to protect plants and animals in their country. They have built more than 300 wildlife and national parks. These areas of countryside, mountains and swamps are protected along with the animals and plants that live there. These places are homes to bears, tigers, rhinoceroses and lions.

Tiger
The Indian tiger is now looked after in the national parks of India.
Many years ago Kings, Princes and Officers enjoyed hunting for tigers and in 1900 just over 100 years ago India was home to about 100,000 tigers. However, these important people hunted so much that in 1970 there were less than 500 tigers left in India. In 1972 a special project was set up to help look after the tigers which meant that they were not allowed to be hunted. This made their numbers grow and their numbers have got bigger since then.

India has over 2000 different types of birds living in their country although the peacock is India's the national bird.
